There are already hundreds of calorie tracking apps in the world. MyFitnessPal has over 200 million users. Yazio, Lose It, Cronometer — all well-built, all widely used. So why did we build Nuwell AI?
The honest answer is that none of those apps were built for us.
Not for Nigerians. Not for Africans. Not for people who eat jollof rice, egusi soup, and pounded yam every single day and need a nutrition tool that actually understands their food, their budget, and their lifestyle.
Here is the full story.
The Real Problem Is Not Calorie Counting
Most people do not actually struggle with tracking calories. They struggle with knowing what to eat consistently.
A lot of people have clear goals; lose weight, gain weight, build muscle. But the real problem is food decisions. Day after day. Meal after meal.
Influencers sell meal plans filled with expensive foreign foods, avocado toast, protein shakes, açaí bowls that have nothing to do with the reality of eating in Lagos, Abuja, or Accra. These plans might work for two weeks. They rarely work long term because they are not sustainable for people living real Nigerian lives.
Nuwell is built to fix that. By focusing on what you can actually eat every day — using foods available around you, at prices you can afford, in the portions you already understand.

We Went Deep Into Nigerian and African Food Data
Most apps that claim to support Nigerian food have surface-level entries — crowd-sourced guesses submitted by random users with no verification. We did not do that.
We built a structured ingredient database from scratch. Every Nigerian ingredient is standardized per 100g with verified nutritional values. We built in local measurements spoons, cups, milk tins, because that is how Nigerians actually measure food. We built real recipes with calculated nutrition, not estimates pulled from the internet.
This is the foundation everything else sits on. Accurate data. Nigerian data. Not copied from a Western database and renamed.
We Built a Multi-Layer Calorie Tracking System
Most apps give rough calorie estimates. We wanted accuracy and convenience — not one or the other. So we built multiple ways to track:
AI image-based estimation: Point your camera at any Nigerian dish and get instant calorie and macro data. No barcode. No manual search.
Text-based logging: Describe what you ate in plain language and the AI identifies ingredients, portions, and nutritional data automatically.
Recipe-based calculation: Log a full recipe and get the complete nutritional breakdown calculated from ingredients.
Ingredient-level precision: For users who want granular control, log individual ingredients with exact quantities.

Tracking Is Not Just Food
We built Nuwell to track the full picture of daily health, not just what you eat.
Water tracking so you actually hit your hydration goals. Weight tracking with progress visualization so you can see the trend over time, not just today's number. Advanced calorie breakdown showing macros, daily patterns, and weekly trends so you understand not just what you ate but how it is affecting your progress.
A Personalized AI Guide — Not Just Numbers
Instead of just showing you numbers, we are building something that actually thinks with you.
An AI guide that can say: "Based on your goal, and the local foods available to you; here is what you should eat today."
Not generic advice. Not a Western meal plan. Guidance that understands your life, your food, and your goals, and gives you something you can actually act on.

Food Is Cultural — So We Did Not Limit It
Nigerian meals. African dishes. Global cuisines. Nuwell covers all of it, because food is cultural and telling someone to abandon their culture to be healthy is not a solution.
Every meal can be filtered by diet type, health condition, and personal preference. Whether you are managing diabetes, following a vegan diet, avoiding certain allergens, or eating for pregnancy; Nuwell gives you relevant options without making you feel like you have to choose between your health and your food.
We Are Building Beyond Solo Tracking
Most calorie apps are a solo experience. You log your food, see your numbers, and that is it. We think nutrition is more powerful when it is shared.
We are building community features into Nuwell; shared meals, food ideas, accountability partners. Real people with real diets, not just isolated logging. Because sustainable healthy eating is easier when you are not doing it alone.

We Want Your Honest Feedback
We are still building. Every week Nuwell gets smarter, more accurate, and more useful — and that happens because of feedback from real people eating real Nigerian food every day.
So we want to ask directly: what is missing from the calorie tracking apps you have tried that frustrates you the most?
